Week 2

Week 2 has sped by! The school schedule is packed so I don't have as much time as I thought I'd have to sit down and blog. I'm learning a lot about myself here though!  When I was younger I always felt opposed to to the suggestion of being a teacher, but now I can really see myself enjoying it. It's a unique opportunity to mold the early lives of children and point them to Christ by setting an example of love. As a teacher, you not only have the opportunity to influence the lives of children but adults as well. I am inspired by a ministry that the school and church here started called "Open House." A couple of the missionaries and interns run these English classes for adults with a bible study built in at the end. I could see this model for teaching about Christianity working well across all Japan as many Japanese adults are interested in learning English.

A couple things I'd appreciate prayer for...
  1. The ability to connect well with the students here.  Often times it's hard for me to reach outside of my comfort bubble to connect with people and create relationships. But in order to point them to Christ I need to be able to reach out as a friend to the kids here. Because so many interns come and go here, I feel in a sense that the kids likely aren't interested in creating relationships that will only last a few weeks. Please pray that I would know how to be a good friend and love them all well.
  2. Pray that I would have God's strength to battle against self-centeredness (which is a detriment to loving service.)
  3. That I would continue to persevere in studying Japanese.

  2. I am amazed at the opportunity that God has given you! Only God could put you in a place you love, doing activities you love while teaching love to you and others! As I stop here for a moment, in my chair, I can only feel vast and unexplained excitement for the journey God has given you. An avenue for your passions. For the rich fields He has planted you in to harvest. I am thrilled to see God work! Thanks for the eloquent and insightful posts!

    Enjoy the journey,
    ~Joe
